September clubs!

Nearly finished club dyeing for this month so look out for parcels soon. Have just three places available for the sock club, two for roving medley and two for the Fibre Adventure club, starting October. I have some new fibres in this week too, so look out for these in the next couple of months' parcels, folks! Sock blanks - back in stock soon - reserve yours now!

A quick product update to say that I have more stocks of my "Blank Canvas" undyed sock blanks coming in stock shortly. As stocks will be limited, you can reserve yours by emailing me, or posting a comment here.

The blanks are are knitted with two strands of 75% superwash merino/25% nylon sock yarn. There is 100g (about 400 yds) of yarn in each blank, enough to knit a pair of matching socks. They will dye beautifully with koolaid/food colours, procion dyes (acid dye method), acid dyes, or Earthues/Hue & Dye natural dyes. Of course, they're not just for socks, use them for hats, scarves, mitts, kids' items etc. For pics of completed socks, check out the website news page, or here on the blog. For those of you on the artisan/reseller mailing list, usual discounts for yarns/fibres apply to purchases of sock blanks : )

Summer School - the finale

A bit delayed but hopefully worth the wait (big stack of stuff to do before the annual sojourn to Cornwall).

And here are photos of everyone's completed pieces. I make no apologies for all the photos, everyone's work was so uniquely lovely I couldn't possibly choose just a couple - and besides, I thought you'd like to see "something of everything", as it were.

So, in no particular order, I give you:

Liz
And a close-up of a scarf Liz wanted to colour-match. Pretty darn good if you ask me. Take a look, too, at the coral/green trio - these were some of Liz's handspun skeins and look gorgeous dyed.


Jan Two of Jan's colour-matching projects, alpaca sock yarn (back), and a sock blank unravelled and awaiting steaming to de-crinkle it. These were just two of Jan's lovely skeins, her birds skein was also stunning.
Maggie
Purple and blue - irresistible. Maggie also produced the most beautiful skein of merino/silk which I tried in vain to persuade her to part with...
Beverley
Beverley created a wonderful range of greens - subtle yet rich. Her dip-dyed ball of bfl/alpaca (above) was just gorgeous.
Pippa
Pippa's colourways were so vibrant and striking. Her Ipswich Town skein in blue, white and yellow was particularly fun, and her rainbow blank (top) was just yummy.
Monica
The photos don't do these colourways justice as Monica's pieces were really lovely. What you can see from the pics is how Monica used charting really effectively to plan her pattern repeat for the long skein project.
Gill
Gill definitely qualified for knitter of the week as she produced an entire sock from the knitted blank she painted on day two - amazing! You can see below how the knitted sock mirrors the picture of the dyed blank.
AngelaAngela was way too quick for me so I don't have all her work, but these unravelled blanks had such lovely colour variations and the hand-painted bfl/alpaca sock skein (above), was gorgeous with its subtle blends of blues.

HelenHelen sells her work at a local gallery in Lincoln and it's easy to see why (I think at least a couple of students were tempted on a visit there on Wednesday!). I loved this sock blank. It really captured the rich variation in the postcard image.

Andrea
I think Andrea must have more hours in her day than me! By the end of the week all her pieces, recipes, samples and work were already beautifully presented in files. Although these photos aren't brilliant it isn't hard to imagine how fabulous these silk hankies looked in real life.

Pat
There was much interest in Pat's amazing diamond patterning on her samples, quite different to the 4ply ones. I think a few of us will be beetling off to try and replicate that effect! And note those lovely handspun yarns, too : )
Isabel
Aren't these mini-skeins just too cute? The lovely purple yarn is a blank wound off and de-crinkled and we're all waiting to see how the other blank turns out (any pics yet, Isabel? No pressure!). The colours are gorgeous and the pattern promises to be most interesting....

Well, that's a sample of everyone's work and there's more, equally beautiful work to see here. It really was an amazing week and I want to say thank you to a fabulous group of students for making it such a pleasure - Thank you heaps!!!

And while I'm on the subject of thank you's, a big thank you to Bishop Grosseteste College and to Ronnie the chef for the fab shortbread recipe (and bag of homemade shortbread!). If you need evidence of how good the food was, I put on over 3lbs in the week (eek!). Oh, and not forgetting Judith the convenor, Peter her very patient husband, all the other helpers, tutors and all the people who visited the exhibition and trade fair too! See you all in 2011 in Edinburgh!

Summer School - Wednesday - Painting blanks

After yesterday's busy day, today was a gentle, fun morning painting knitted sock blanks. If you haven't tried this technique before it is delightfully simple and you get amazing results. Here it is in a nutshell:

First, you will need a "blank". This is essentially a piece of machine knitted fabric. A friend machine knits long pieces of fabric for me using two strands of superwash merino/nylon sock weight (4ply ) yarn. They are finished off with waste yarn which stops the blank unravelling until you are ready to knit. (See below for ordering info.).

Soak your blank in water with some citric acid (25g acid per 100g blank) or white vinegar (100ml per 100g blank), and a spot of washing up liquid.

When it is good and wet, squeeze it out thoroughly (I spin dry mine) and lay it on clingfilm with a layer of towel/kitchen paper underneath to stop the dye slooshing around too much.

Paint the blank with your dyes - we were using my procion mx fibre reactive dyes.

When you've finished painting, lay on another layer of kitchen paper, wrap the blank up in the clingfilm like a swiss roll and microwave (or steam) until piping hot.

Let it cool, unwrap, rinse and dry - voila - your blank is ready.

To knit with you simply unravel the waste yarn until you reach the "live" knitting and you can then either:

• Knit direct from the blank and wind the second strand into a ball as you go or,
• Unwind both strands into balls then knit or,
• Wind off the strands onto a niddy-noddy or swift, steam/wash the skein/s and hang to dry with a little tension. This approach evens out the kinks in the yarn.

Oops, nearly forgot to mention - all the blanks sold out at Summer School but new stocks are coming in later this month. I already have a list of advance orders so if you would like to order they are £8.50 each for 100g blank of 75% superwash merino/25% nylon. They are knitted double-stranded which makes them perfect for a matching pair of socks and if you're a "two-at-a-time" knitter you can even knit them both at once!
